Camillian Home’s Inclusive Playground, Sensory Park and Garden Project:

How It All Came Together

When I first started volunteering at Camillian Home, I would bring our children with disabilities to visit international schools in Bangkok. These schools have nice facilities for their students who are from wealthy families. I thought, “Why should these rich kids have one standard and our disadvantaged kids have another standard of living?” I also noticed that none of the play areas in the schools were wheel chair friendly.  We had to lift our kids out of their wheel chairs and physically carry them through play areas that were not designed for them. That’s when I began thinking about creating an inclusive playground that allowed kids of all abilities to play together.

In September 2012, Michael Shannon, head of the Irish Thai Chamber of Commerce, told me that one of his golf buddies was the General Manager of Mead Johnson Nutrition Thailand (MJN). He offered to set up a meeting in the hopes that they could support the disabled community of Thailand. I learned that MJN had supported children’s initiatives in the past, especially in terms of equipment, so it seemed they would be perfect for this project. I immediately drew up a proposal for the inclusive playground and presented it to Blair Sailes, the General Manager of MJN. With his support, MJN agreed to donate 300,000THB to the project.

After doing some research on the internet, I drew up a design for a wheelchair accessible playground, including slides and ramps. Luckily, I found a local factory in Chonburi who made the playset parts within budget. Although we raised 100,000THB for artificial grass for the playground, this was not enough for the ideal type of grass we wanted. Fortunately, I was able to speak with Khun Chadchaphol Sukaramula, the Managing Director of Southwest Greens Thailand (Thaiyarnyon), just by making a phone call to the company. When he heard that it was for a charity, he offered top of the line artificial grass worth 380,000THB for the inclusive playground project, and even offered to install it for free.

MJN was so pleased with the results of the inclusive playset that they agreed to support an extension of the project. I started researching further on how special needs children learned through play, and more ideas came forth. I dreamed of having outdoor musical instruments and raised plant beds that all children, including wheelchair bound kids could enjoy playing with.

At our gala dinner in February 2013, I was fortunate to meet a landscape architect, Natalie Schneider from P.L. Design Company Limited, who agreed to do all the landscape architect work free of charge. I returned to MJN with a more detailed proposal, and they agreed to donate 800,000THB to extend the playground by bringing in outdoor musical instruments and adaptive swing seats, which did not exist in anywhere Thailand. Meanwhile, the Embassy of Luxembourg, who had sponsored the aqua therapy pool project completed in early 2013, asked if there was something else they could support. They also agreed to contribute to the inclusive playground and sensory garden project.

Shortly after, I received an invitation to a dinner party. It turned out to be at the house of the Canadian Ambassador, whose wife had heard about Camillian Home through the mother of one of her daughter’s friends, Miriam Amelynck, a Camillian Home Committee Member. I brought the proposal with me to dinner and spoke with Ambassador Philip Calvert about signing on to the project. After a quick perusal, he nodded his head and introduced me to Jean-Stephane Couture who was the Program Director for Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI). I sent him the proposal and with the support of the Ambassador, it was approved.

Around this time, my friend Catherine McNabb invited me to have dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel to meet a woman named Emma Cashmore. She told me about the Eventia Awards which support one charity per year, and asked if Camillian Home had any projects that needed funding. I presented the inclusive playground and garden, and thanks to Emma, Camillian Home was selected and will receive 400,000THB from the event, held in London in 2013.

In May 2013, the Irish Thai Chamber of Commerce held their annual charity golf tournament to raise money for Camillian Home. At the event I met John Pollard who handed me his business card for Meinhart Engineering Company. I immediately asked if he could support the inclusive park and garden project by offering engineering work. Again, I sent the proposal, it was approved, and we received all the engineering work for free.

We finally started construction of the sensory park and garden and playground extension in January 2014. I started to place the order for the instruments and adaptive swing seats. When we realized that shipping just one swing seat from the United States to Thailand would cost more than the actual seat, Camillian Home volunteer Yvonne Liang made a Facebook post asking if anyone would be willing to bring it on a flight as extra baggage. Within the same day, her friend Derek Van Pelt offered his friend Nathan Christoff’s shipment container. It would take a few months, but it was more than worth it because we ended up bringing in both an adult-sized and a child-sized adaptive swing seats, instead of just one.

Soon after, the Embassy of Luxembourg contacted me again about supporting a project for Camillian Home. Now they are funding the wheelchair accessible bathroom that is currently being built in the playground area. One of our staff called Siam Cement Group Thailand (SCG) and was able to get some of the bathroom parts donated as well.

I would like to sincerely thank all the individuals and organizations who helped bring this dream of an inclusive playground into reality. The goal of this project is not only to provide a fun learning environment for our children with disabilities, but a community park where all children of all abilities can play and interact together. We hope to become a model for other children’s charities to follow. There should be a home caring for poor, disadvantaged children living with disabilities in every district in Thailand. Unfortunately, since that is not the case right now, Camillian Home is providing free education, food, therapy, and rehabilitation for impoverished and disabled children in eight districts in Thailand. It’s a heavy burden to continually find the resources to care for so many children in need. To get funding for projects is a lot easier than getting sustainable income for the daily needs of the children, such as hiring teachers and trained therapists, or the cleaners and cooks. I hope more people will consider becoming a monthly sponsor today so our kids can continue to live to the fullest at Camillian Home.

เมื่อเริ่มทำงานอาสาสมัครที่บ้านคามิลเลียน  ผมจะพาเด็กซึ่งมีความพิการไปเยี่ยมโรงเรียนนานาชาติในกรุงเทพ โรงเรียนเหล่านี้เพียบพร้อมไปด้วยสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกที่ยอดเยี่ยมสำหรับนักเรียนซึ่งมาจากครอบครัวที่ร่ำรวย ผมตั้งคำถามกับตัวเองว่า “ทำไมมาตรฐานความเป็นอยู่ของเด็กที่มีฐานะดีกับเด็กพิการของเราจึงแตกต่างกันมากนัก”  ผมเริ่มสังเกตได้ว่า ไม่มีพื้นที่เล่นซึ่งเหมาะสำหรับเด็กๆ ที่ต้องนั่งรถเข็นเลย  เราจำเป็นต้องยกเด็กๆ ออกจากรถเข็นและแบกพวกเขาในสนามเด็กเล่นที่ไม่ได้ออกแบบมาสำหรับพวกเขาเลย นั่นเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นที่ผมคิดถึงการสร้างสนามเด็กเล่นแบบเล่นรวม ซึ่งออกแบบให้เด็กๆ ทุกคนไม่ว่าจะเป็นเด็กธรรมดา เด็กพิเศษ และเด็กพิการสามารถเล่นด้วยกันได้

เมื่อเดือนกันยายน พ.ศ. 2555  มร. ไมเคิล แชนนอน หัวหน้าหอการค้าไทย-ไอร์แลนด์ ได้แนะนำเพื่อนเล่นกอล์ฟของเขาคนหนึ่งซึ่งเป็นผู้จัดการทั่วไปมี้ด จอห์นสัน นิวทริชัน (ประเทศไทย) จำกัด โดยเขาช่วยนัดประชุมเพื่อความเป็นไปได้ในการช่วยเหลือสังคมผู้พิการในประเทศไทย จากนั้น ผมได้ทราบว่า ที่ผ่านมาทางมี้ด จอห์สันได้ให้การสนับสนุนโครงการสำหรับเด็กหลากหลายโครงการ โดยเฉพาะในด้านอุปกรณ์  ซึ่งประจวบเหมาะกับโครงการที่ผมคิดขึ้นเป็นอย่างยิ่ง ผมจึงส่งแผนงานเกี่ยวกับสนามเด็กเล่นแบบเล่นรวม และมีโอกาสนำเสนอแก่มร. แบลร์ เซลล์  ผู้จัดการทั่วไปของมี้ด จอห์นสัน นิวทริชัน (ประเทศไทย) จำกัด ด้วยการสนับสนุนของมร. แบลร์  ทางมี้ด จอห์นสัน ประเทศไทยจึงบริจาคเงินจำนวน  300,000 บาทให้แก่โครงการนี้

หลังจากค้นหาข้อมูลผ่านอินเทอร์เน็ต ผมได้ออกแบบสนามเด็กเล่นที่เอื้อต่อเด็กที่นั่งรถเข็น โดยมีทางลาดและรางเลื่อน และนับเป็นโชคดีที่ผมเจอโรงงานแห่งหนึ่งในจังหวัดชลบุรี ซึ่งเป็นผู้ผลิตส่วนประกอบของเล่น โดยสามารถผลิตชิ้นส่วนของเล่นภายใต้งบประมาณที่มีได้ นอกจากนี้ เรายังได้เงินบริจาคจำนวน 100,000 บาทสำหรับหญ้าเทียมปูพื้นสนามเด็กเล่น แต่ด้วยเงินจำนวนนี้ยังไม่เพียงพอต่อการจัดหาหญ้าประเภทที่เราต้องการได้ แล้วโชคก็เข้าข้างเราอีกครั้ง เมื่อผมมีโอกาสได้พูดคุยกับคุณชัชพล ศุกระมูล กรรมการผู้จัดการของเซาท์เวสต์ กรีนส์ ประเทศไทย (ไทยยานยนต์) จากการติดต่อไปที่บริษัทผ่านทางโทรศัพท์  เมื่อคุณชัชพลได้ยินว่าเป็นโครงการเพื่อการกุศล เขาได้มอบหญ้าเทียมเกรดเอมูลค่า 380,000 บาทแทนสำหรับใช้ในโครงการสนามเด็กเล่นแบบเล่นรวม นอกจากนี้ ยังเอื้อเฟื้อการปูหญ้าทั้งหมดโดยไม่คิดค่าใช้จ่ายอีกด้วย

มี้ด จอห์นสัน ประเทศไทยมีความพึงพอใจต่อผลลัพธ์ที่ออกมาของเครื่องเล่นแบบเล่นรวม พวกเขาจึงตกลงที่จะให้การสนับสนุนส่วนขยายของโครงการนี้  ผมเริ่มค้นหาข้อมูลเพิ่มเติมเกี่ยวกับการเรียนรู้ของเด็กพิเศษผ่านการเล่น และหลากหลายไอเดียต่อยอด ผมเริ่มวาดฝันถึงเครื่องดนตรีกลางแจ้งและแปลงผักสำหรับเด็กๆ รวมถึงเด็กที่ใช้รถเข็นสามารถร่วมกิจกรรมได้อย่างสนุกสนาน

ณ งานกาลาดินเนอร์ เมื่อเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ ปีที่ผ่านมา  ผมโชคดีที่ได้พบกับนาตาลี ชไนเดอร์ ภูมิสถาปนิก จากบริษัท พี แอล ดีไซน์ จำกัด ซึ่งเธอได้อุทิศเวลาสำหรับการทำงานภูมิสถาปัตยกรรมทั้งหมดให้ฟรี  ผมจึงกลับไปหามี้ด จอห์นสัน ประเทศไทยพร้อมกับแผนงานอย่างละเอียด ทางมี้ด จอห์นสัน นิวทริชัน (ประเทศไทย) จำกัด ได้บริจาคเงินจำนวนถึง 800,000 บาทเพื่อต่อยอดสนามเด็กเล่น โดยนำเครื่องดนตรีกลางแจ้ง และชิงช้าแบบปรับได้ ซึ่งยังไม่เคยมีในเมืองไทย  ในขณะเดียวกันสถานฑูตลักเซมเบิร์ก ซึ่งเคยเป็นผู้สนับสนุนโครงการสระวารีบำบัด ซึ่งเสร็จสมบูรณ์ตั้งแต่ต้นปีพ.ศ. 2556 ได้เสนอความช่วยเหลืออีกครั้ง โดยตกลงที่จะบริจาคสำหรับโครงการสนามเด็กเล่นแบบเล่นรวมและสวนแห่งสัมผัส (sensory park)

หลังจากนั้นไม่นาน ผมได้รับจดหมายเชิญเข้าร่วมงานดินเนอร์ปาร์ตี้ ซึ่งจัดขึ้นที่บ้านของเอกอัครราชฑูตแคนาดา ภริยาท่านเอกอัครราชฑูตเคยได้ยินเกี่ยวกับบ้านคามิลเลียนจากเพื่อนของลูกสาวชื่อ มาเรียม แอมเมลลินค์    ซึ่งเป็นกรรมการของบ้านคามิลเลียน ผมได้นำแผนงานติดตัวไปด้วยและมีโอกาสได้พูดคุยกับเอกอัครราชฑูต ฟิลลิป คาลเวิร์ต เกี่ยวกับความร่วมมือในโครงการนี้  หลังจากท่านได้พิจารณาอย่างรวดเร็วก็ได้แนะนำผมให้รู้จักกับ Jean-Stephane Couture ซึ่งเป็นผู้อำนวยการโครงการของ Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) ผมได้ยื่นแผนวางพร้อมคำสนับสนุนจากท่านเอกอัครราชฑูต แน่นอน โครงการได้รับการอนุมัติเรียบร้อย

ในเวลาใกล้กันนั้น แคทเธอรีน แมคแน็บ เพื่อนของผมได้เชิญให้เข้าร่วมรับประทานอาหารค่ำ ณ โรงแรมโฟร์ซีซั่นส์เพื่อพบกับเอ็มม่า แคชมอร์ เธอแนะนำเกี่ยวกับ Eventia Awards ซึ่งจะทำการบริจาคเพื่อการกุศลปีละหนึ่งครั้ง และถามว่าบ้านคามิลเลียนมีโครงการที่ต้องการเงินสนับสนุนบ้างหรือไม่  ผมได้นำเสนอสนามเด็กเล่นแบบเล่นรวมและแปลงผักให้ฟัง และต้องขอขอบคุณเอ็มม่า  ในที่สุดบ้านคามิลเลียนได้รับคัดเลือกและได้รับเงินบริจาคจำนวน 400,000 บาทจากงานที่จัดขึ้น ณ กรุงลอนดอน ในปีพ.ศ. 2556

เดือนพฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2556 หอการค้าไทย-ไอร์แลนด์ได้จัดการแข่งขันกอล์ฟเพื่อการกุศลประจำปีขึ้นเพื่อหาเงินบริจาคแก่บ้านคามิลเลียน  ภายในงานผมได้พบมร. จอห์น โพลลาร์ด ซึ่งได้ให้นามบัตรของบริษัท Meinhart Engineering เมื่อได้รับผมถามในทันทีว่า สนใจจะร่วมให้การสนับสนุนโครงการสนามเด็กเล่นแบบเล่นรวมและแปลงผักสำหรับเด็กๆ ในส่วนของงานด้านวิศวกรรมบ้างหรือไม่ นับเป็นอีกครั้งที่ผมทำการยื่นแผนงาน และได้รับการอนุมัติ แล้วเราก็ได้รับความช่วยเหลือเกี่ยวกับงานวิศวกรรมโดยไม่มีค่าใช้จ่าย

ในที่สุดเราก็ได้เริ่มงานโครงสร้างของสวนแห่งสัมผัส แปลงผัก และส่วนต่อขยายของสนามเด็กเล่นในเดือนมกราคม ปี 2557  ผมได้เริ่มสั่งเครื่องดนตรีและชิงช้าแบบปรับได้ จึงได้ทราบว่า ค่าขนส่งชิงช้าเพียงชิ้นเดียวจากสหรัฐอเมริกามายังประเทศไทยมีค่าใช้จ่ายแพงกว่าค่าตัวชิงช้า  อีวอน เหลียง อาสาสมัครของบ้านคามิลเลียนจึงได้ถามเพื่อนๆ ผ่านเฟซบุ้กว่า ใครพอจะช่วยขนขึ้นเครื่องเหมือนมีกระเป๋าเพิ่มอีกสักใบได้บ้างหรือไม่  ภายในวันเดียว ดิเร็ก แวน เพลท เพื่อนของอีวอนได้เสนอตู้คอนเทนเนอร์ขนส่งของเนธาน คริสตอฟ ซึ่งจะใช้เวลาประมาณ 1-2 เดือน แต่คุ้มค่ามากกว่าเพราะสุดท้ายเราตัดสินใจซื้อชิงช้าแบบปรับได้ทั้งขนาดสำหรับเด็กและผู้ใหญ่ แทนที่จะซื้อเพียงหนึ่งชิ้น

หลังจากนั้น สถานฑูตลักเซมเบิร์กได้ติดต่อผมอีกครั้งเกี่ยวกับความช่วยเหลือโครงการของบ้านคามิลเลียน  ปัจจุบันเราได้รับเงินบริจาคเพื่อสร้างห้องน้ำสำหรับผู้ใช้รถเข็น ซึ่งขณะนี้กำลังดำเนินการก่อสร้างในส่วนของสนามเด็กเล่น  เจ้าหน้าที่ของเราคนหนึ่งได้ติดต่อเอสซีจี (Siam Cement Group Thailand) และได้รับบริจาคอุปกรณ์ภายในห้องน้ำอีกด้วย

ในโอกาสนี้ ผมของขอขอบพระคุณทุกท่านและทุกองค์กรจากใจที่มีช่วยทำฝันเกี่ยวกับสนามเด็กเล่นแบบเล่นรวมให้เป็นจริง  เป้าหมายของโครงการนี้มิใช่เพียงแค่มอบสิ่งแวดล้อมสำหรับการเรียนรู้ที่แสนสนุกให้แก่เด็กพิการของเรา แต่เป็นสวนของชุมชนที่ซึ่งเด็กทุกคน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเด็กธรรมดาหรือเด็กพิการสามารถเล่นด้วยกันได้ เราหวังว่าจะเป็นแบบอย่างของกิจกรรมการกุศลเพื่อเด็กต่อไป ซึ่งควรจะมีบ้านที่ดูแลเด็กพิการและยากไร้ในทุกๆ อำเภอในประเทศไทย  เป็นที่น่าเสียดายที่ยังไม่เป็นอย่างที่ต้องการ ณ เวลานี้ บ้านคามิลเลียนได้ให้การศึกษา อาหาร การบำบัดรักษา และฟื้นฟูสำหรับเด็กพิการและยากจนใน 8 อำเภอของประเทศไทย ภาระที่แสนหนักที่สุดเห็นจะเป็นการหาแหล่งเงินทุนที่ต่อเนื่องสำหรับการดูแลเด็กเหล่านี้จำนวนมาก การหาเงินทุนสำหรับแต่ละโครงการง่ายดายกว่าการหารายได้ที่ยั่งยืนต่อเนื่องสำหรับใช้จ่ายเพื่อเด็กในแต่ละวัน อาทิ การจ้างครูและนักบำบัด คนทำความสะอาดและคนทำอาหาร ผมหวังเป็นอย่างยิ่งว่าผู้คนจะหันมาพิจารณาเป็นผู้อุปถัมถ์รายเดือนตั้งแต่วันนี้ เพื่อให้เด็กๆ ของเราสามารถดำรงชีวิตต่อไปอย่างสดใสที่บ้านคามิลเลียน
